Looking to Join TEAD's Therapeutic Riding Program?

6 Easy Steps to Becoming a Rider:

  1. Complete our Rider Medical Form package.  
  2. Get package signed off by the applicant's physician.   
  3. Return package to TEAD by either:
    • Mailing to 8360 Leeming Road East, RR #3, Mount Hope, ON L0R 1W0
    • Scanning & emailing to troton@tead.on.ca  (please do not take photos of the form)
    • Faxing to 905-679-1705 - attention Rachel Harper
  4. Wait for approval from our Occupational Therapist. 
  5. Schedule an assessment.
  6. Register for lessons/ summer camp/ mounted programming.

Contraindications to Therapeutic Riding

The following diagnoses represent contraindications to therapeutic horseback riding as stated by CanTRA (the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association).  Please note whether these conditions are present and to what degree in the Rider Medical Form package:

ORTHOPAEDIC

  • Acute arthritis
  • Acute herniated disc or prolapsed disc
  • Atlanto-axial instabilities 
  • Coax arthrosis (degeneration of hip joint)
  • Structural cranial deficits
  • Osteogenesis imperfecta
  • Pathological fractures
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Structural scoliosis >30 degrees, excessive kyphosis or lordosis or hemivertebra
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Hip subluxation, dislocation or dysplasia (one hip)

NEUROLOGICAL

  • CVA secondary to unclipped aneurysm or angioma
  • Paralysis due to spinal cord injury above T6 (adult)
  • Spina bifida associations – Chiari II malformations, hydromyelia, tethered cord
  • Uncontrolled seizures within the last 6 months while on medication, or 12 months not on medication

OTHER

  • >170 lbs
  • Age under 2 years old
